Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 34 fair, 47 good, and 15 excellent.

Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 43 fair, 40 good, and 12 excellent. Soybeans emerged was 96 percent, near 100 both last year and for the five-year average. Blooming was 3 percent, well behind 27 last year and 31 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 28 fair, 58 good, and 10 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 97 percent, near 99 both last year and average.

Field Crops Report: Soybean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 27 fair, 63 good, and 6 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 6 percent, well behind 38 last year and 29 for the five-year average.

Spring wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 17 fair, 74 good, and 8 excellent. Spring wheat jointed was 93 percent, near 96 last year and 95 average. Headed was 55 percent, well behind 78 last year, and behind 71 average.

Minnesota

The southern half of Minnesota dealt with wet conditions this week limiting the number of days suitable for fieldwork to 3.8 during the week ending July 7, 2019, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Warmer than normal temperatures over much of Minnesota aided crop development giving crops some much needed heating units. However, the wet conditions in the southern half of the state hindered fertilizer and spraying activities in the area.

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short, 5 percent short, 61 percent adequate and 34 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition was rated 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 62 percent adequate and 34 percent surplus.

Corn condition was rated at 60 percent good to excellent, a slight improvement from the previous week. Nearly all soybeans had emerged this week, with a few reports of some having started to bloom. Soybean condition rated 61 percent good to excellent.

Ninety-seven percent of the spring wheat crop had jointed, 3 days behind the 5-year average. Spring wheat headed reached 75 percent this week, 2 days behind normal. Spring wheat condition rated 83 percent good to excellent. Oats jointed stretched to 99 percent, now 5 days ahead of the average. Oats headed were 79 percent complete, 3 days behind normal. Oats turning color reached 4 percent, 10 days behind average. Oat condition was rated 72 percent good to excellent, improving from the previous week. Barley jointed was 98 percent, 4 days ahead of the average. Barley headed reached 82 percent, now 2 days ahead of normal after being 6 days behind average last week. A few reports of barley turning color were received this week. Barley condition rated 80 percent good to excellent.

Dry edible bean emergence was virtually complete this week, while 6 percent had started to bloom, 5 days behind the average. Dry edible bean condition was rated 65 percent good to excellent, falling from the previous week. Sunflower condition rated 82 percent good to excellent, improving slightly from the previous week. Potato condition rated 94 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeet condition was rated 79 percent good to excellent.

The first cutting of alfalfa hay was 94 percent complete, 2 days behind last year and the 5-year average. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 19 percent this week, 8 days behind normal. All hay condition rated 78 percent good to excellent, improving slightly from the previous week. Pasture condition rated 77 percent good to excellent, increasing from the previous week.

Iowa

While parts of Iowa experienced heavy rain, overall it was hot, dry week which allowed farmers to get fieldwork done during the week ending July 7, 2019, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Statewide there were 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Fieldwork activities included planting, harvesting hay, spraying and applying nitrogen.

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short, 4 percent short, 80 percent adequate and 16 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 77 percent adequate and 21 percent surplus.

Statewide, 1 percent of the corn crop has begun to silk, over 1 week behind last year and the 5-year average. Corn condition declined to 61 percent good to excellent. Soybean emergence reached 96 percent, 2 weeks behind average. Seven percent of the soybean crop has started to bloom, 12 days behind last year and 10 days behind average. Soybean condition rated 64 percent good to excellent. Ninety-two percent of the oat crop has headed, 1 week behind last year and 6 days behind average. Twenty-eight percent of the crop has started coloring, 6 days behind average. Oat condition rated 61 percent good to excellent.

Ninety-four percent of the first cutting of alfalfa hay has been cut, nearly 1 week behind average. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 12 percent statewide, 11 days behind average. Hay condition rated 62 percent good to excellent. Pasture condition rated 69 percent good to excellent. Livestock experienced some stress due to heat. Feedlots continue to dry out.

Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – For the week ending July 7, 2019, there were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 4 short, 84 adequate, and 12 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 2 short, 86 adequate, and 12 surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 20 fair, 63 good, and 13 excellent. Corn silking was 2 percent, well behind 28 last year, and behind 16 for the five-year average.

Soybean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 23 fair, 63 good, and 10 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 10 percent, well behind 48 last year and 37 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 22 fair, 50 good, and 20 excellent. Winter wheat harvested was 2 percent, well behind 22 last year and 26 average.
