South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS — For the week ending July 14, 2019, there were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 5 short, 71 adequate, and 24 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 2 short, 68 adequate, and 30 surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 31 fair, 50 good, and 12 excellent.

Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 40 fair, 41 good, and 11 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 32 percent, behind 50 both last year and the five-year average.

Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 4 poor, 20 fair, 64 good, and 10 excellent.

Spring wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 25 fair, 61 good, and 13 excellent. Spring wheat headed was 75 percent, well behind 95 both last year and average.

Oats condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 20 fair, 66 good, and 11 excellent. Oats headed was 79 percent, behind 98 both last year and average.

Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 1 poor, 18 fair, 77 good, and 3 excellent.

North Dakota

FARGO, N.D. — For the week ending July 14, 2019, there were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 13 short, 73 adequate, and 14 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 16 short, 71 adequate, and 11 surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 5 poor, 26 fair, 62 good, and 7 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 18 percent, well behind 63 last year and 49 for the five-year average.

Spring wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 18 fair, 69 good, and 11 excellent. Spring wheat jointed was 98 percent, near 100 last year, and equal to average. Headed was 79 percent, behind 92 last year and 86 average. Coloring was 5 percent, well behind 25 last year, and behind 23 average.

Durum wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 22 fair, 68 good, and 9 excellent. Durum wheat headed was 75 percent, behind 88 last year, but ahead of 68 average. Coloring was 2 percent, behind 13 last year and 10 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 15 fair, 71 good, and 10 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 95 percent. Coloring was 29 percent, well behind 70 last year and 59 average. Mature was 3 percent, behind 18 last year.

Corn condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 20 fair, 67 good, and 10 excellent. Corn silking was 1 percent, well behind 29 last year, and behind 15 average.

Canola condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 19 fair, 67 good, and 7 excellent. Canola blooming was 92 percent, near 94 last year, and equal to average. Coloring was 1 percent, behind 14 last year and 15 average.

Sugarbeet condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 5 fair, 15 good, and 79 excellent.

Oats condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 14 fair, 69 good, and 15 excellent. Oats jointed was 96 percent, near 98 both last year and average. Headed was 69 percent, behind 87 last year and 85 average. Coloring was 1 percent, behind 20 last year, and well behind 27 average.

Barley condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 15 fair, 73 good, and 11 excellent. Barley jointed was 97 percent, near 100 last year and 99 average. Headed was 85 percent, behind 94 last year, and near 89 average. Coloring was 5 percent, well behind 32 last year and 29 average.

Dry edible peas condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 19 fair, 73 good, and 6 excellent. Dry edible peas blooming was 84 percent, behind 89 last year, and near 86 average. Dropping leaves was 2 percent, well behind 23 last year.

Sunflower condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 19 fair, 76 good, and 3 excellent. Sunflowers emerged was 99 percent. Blooming was 6 percent, behind 13 last year, and near 7 average.

Flaxseed condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 23 fair, 71 good, and 5 excellent. Flaxseed blooming was 72 percent, near 76 last year and 71 average.

Potato condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 20 fair, 67 good, and 13 excellent. Potatoes blooming was 61 percent, well behind 82 last year, and near 65 average. Rows closed was 11 percent, well behind 44 last year.

Dry edible bean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 21 fair, 70 good, and 7 excellent. Dry edible beans blooming was 34 percent, well behind 60 last year, and near 38 average. Setting pods was 1 percent.

Alfalfa condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 25 fair, 58 good, and 10 excellent. Alfalfa first cutting was 73 percent, behind 86 last year and 83 average.

Minnesota

The northwest corner of Minnesota dealt with above average precipitation, while other districts received some much needed warmer temperatures. The number of days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending July 14, 2019, was 4.3, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Crop development progressed this week even though some variable temperatures were observed throughout the State.

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 68 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 70 percent adequate and 27 percent surplus.

Silked corn, at 2 percent, was 10 days behind the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated at 58 percent good to excellent, a slight decrease from the previous week. Soybeans blooming reached 16 percent this week, 11 days behind the average. Soybean condition rated 60 percent good to excellent.

Ninety-six percent of the spring wheat crop has headed, now 6 days ahead of average. Spring wheat turning color progressed to 20 percent this week, 5 days behind normal. Spring wheat condition rated 85 percent good to excellent. Oats headed reached 95 percent, now 3 days ahead of the average. Oats coloring were 23 percent complete, 6 days behind normal. Oat condition was rated 71 percent good to excellent. Barley headed was 97 percent, 9 days ahead of the average. Barley turning color reached 28 percent, 2 days behind normal. Barley condition rated 80 percent good to excellent.

Dry edible bean blooming reached 18 percent complete, 6 days behind the average. Dry edible bean condition was rated 64 percent good to excellent, falling slightly from the previous week. Sunflower condition rated 80 percent good to excellent, declining slightly from the previous week. Potato condition rated 96 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeet condition was rated 76 percent good to excellent, falling from the previous week.

The first cutting of alfalfa hay was 98 percent complete, only 1 day behind the 5-year average. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 42 percent this week, 6 days behind normal. All hay condition rated 79 percent good to excellent, improving slightly from the previous week. Pasture condition rated 77 percent good to excellent, remaining steady compared to last week.

Iowa

It was a dry week in Iowa that allowed farmers 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 14, 2019, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was the most days suitable for fieldwork this season. The recent dry weather helped farmers catch up on fieldwork activities; however, there were many comments that areas in Iowa now need rain to help crops continue to move along.

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 1 percent very short, 14 percent short, 78 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus. Districts in the southern third of Iowa reported topsoil moisture conditions with over 25 percent short to very short. This is the first time this season any district in Iowa reported topsoil moisture condition at 25 percent or higher short to very short. Subsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short, 9 percent short, 80 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus.

Eight percent of the corn crop has begun to silk, 13 days behind last year and 10 days behind the 5-year average. Corn condition rated 62 percent good to excellent. Nearly all of the expected soybean crop has emerged at 98 percent statewide. Twenty-six percent of the crop has started to bloom, 12 days behind last year and 9 days behind average. Soybean condition rated 63 percent good to excellent. Ninety-six percent of the oat crop has headed, 1 week behind average. Fifty-five percent of the crop has started coloring, 5 days behind both last year and average. Oat condition improved from the previous week to 65 percent good to excellent.

Nearly all of the first cutting of alfalfa hay has been cut at 98 percent complete. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 33 percent, 11 days behind last year and 9 days behind average. Hay condition rated 61 percent good to excellent. Pasture condition declined to 65 percent good to excellent. Livestock experienced some stress due to heat.

Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. — For the week ending July 14, 2019, there were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 13 short, 75 adequate, and 11 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 6 short, 86 adequate, and 8 surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 19 fair, 63 good, and 13 excellent. Corn silking was 11 percent, well behind 60 last year and 42 for the five-year average.

Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 24 fair, 63 good, and 8 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 28 percent, well behind 63 last year and 54 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 20 fair, 55 good, and 18 excellent. Winter wheat harvested was 14 percent, well behind 57 last year and 52 average.

Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 24 fair, 66 good, and 7 excellent. Sorghum headed was 13 percent, behind 22 last year, but near 10 average.

Oats condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 26 fair, 58 good, and 9 excellent. Oats headed was 95 percent, behind 100 last year, and near 99 average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 31 fair, 56 good, and 5 excellent. Dry edible beans emerged was 95 percent.
