South Dakota Sheep Growers Association to host second annual premium ewe sale
BROOKINGS — To meet the needs of emerging demand within the sheep industry for superior young ewe genetics available in smaller lot sizes, the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association in cooperation with SDSU Extension is hosting a premium ewe sale in conjunction with educational programming July 27 at Magness Livestock Auction (105 NE Custer Avenue, Huron).
Currently, 515 head of yearling ewes from 22 consignors will be offered.

Objectives of the SDSGA sale include:
1. Provide an opportunity to obtain excellent replacement ewe genetics for flock improvement.
2. Increase/expand the number of producers and sheep in South Dakota.
3. Increase SDSGA membership and promote the SDSGA as a vibrant commodity organization committed to supporting sheep producers.
4. Generate a revenue source to support the SDSGA Executive Secretary position recently filled by Dr. Lisa Surber. Proceeds will be applied to the position’s salary.
Beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Magness Livestock Auction Café, SDSU Extension will be hosting educational sessions on sheep and wool related topics.
10:00 a.m. — Welcome, Introductions and Announcements
10:15 – 11:00 a.m. — Dr. Surber — Ensuring Wool Clip Value & How Producers Can Incorporate Optical Fiber Analysis Technology to Improve Their Flock’s Wool Clip
11:00 – 11:15 a.m. — Cookies and Refreshments
11:30 – 12:00 a.m. — Best Practices for Increasing Your Lamb Crop
Following the SDSU Extension program, the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association is sponsoring a free lamb lunch to all buyers and consignors attending the sale.
