BROOKINGS, S.D. — Gerontologists from SDSU Extension and NDSU Extension invite the public to take a monthly online lunch break this winter to discuss issues such as Alzheimer’s, respite care and health and wellness for older adults. The webinars will be held the second Thursdays in January, February and March from noon to 1 p.m. CST each day.

According to Jane Strommen, NDSU Extension Gerontology Specialist, past gerontology webinars have been popular, and the topics addressed in the 2021 sessions were requested by previous attendees.

“A key role of Extension is to connect residents with the information and resources they need to accomplish their goals,” says Leacey Brown, SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist.

Brown says the topics addressed during this webinar series will be beneficial to residents of both states:

The Jan. 14 webinar will be presented by Scott Bernstein, community educator with the North Dakota Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Bernstein’s presentation will provide effective strategies for communicating with people who have Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

The Feb. 11 webinar will feature Brandon Boe, program specialist for the Division of Long-Term Services and Supports (Department of Human Services) in South Dakota and Mary Weltz, program administrator for the Department of Human Services, Aging Services Division in North Dakota. Boe and Weltz will provide details about what respite care is and how to access respite services in North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Mar. 11 webinar will lead by Strommen and Brown. The Extension Gerontologists will discuss purposeful aging and the important role it plays in health and wellness for older adults.

Individuals will be able to participate from the comfort of their own home or during their lunch hour. The February and March webinars will be recorded and available on the SDSU Extension YouTube channel after the event.

There is no cost to participate. Registration can be found at the Events page (https://extension.sdstate.edu/events).
