South Dakota

For the week ending October 23, 2022, there were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 42% very short, 42% short, 15% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 41% very short, 41% short, 17% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 15% very poor, 17% poor, 31% fair, 34% good, and 3% excellent. Corn harvested was 64%, near 62% last year, and well ahead of 40% for the five-year average.

Soybeans harvested was 93%, near 92% last year, and ahead of 74% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1% very poor, 22% poor, 42% fair, 34% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat planted was 96%, near 98% last year, and equal to average. Emerged was 62%, near 66% last year, and behind 77% average.

Sorghum harvested was 68%, behind 78% last year, but well ahead of 47% average.

Sunflowers harvested was 32%, behind 41% last year, but ahead of 26% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 30% very poor, 33% poor, 26% fair, 11% good, and 0% excellent.

North Dakota

For the week ending October 23, 2022, there were 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 22% very short, 48% short, 29% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 21% very short, 44% short, 34% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybeans harvested was 92%, near 90% last year, and well ahead of 72% for the five-year average.

Winter wheat condition rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 34% fair, 57% good, and 7% excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 88%, near 89% last year, but ahead of 82% average.

Corn condition rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 32% fair, 53% good, and 5% excellent. Corn mature was 97%, near 100% last year, but ahead of 92% average. Harvested was 48%, behind 53% last year, but ahead of 34% average.

Sugarbeets harvested was 95%, well ahead of 63% last year, and ahead of 77% average.

Sunflower condition rated 3% very poor, 8% poor, 38% fair, 47% good, and 4% excellent. Sunflowers bracts turned brown was 98%, near 97% both last year and average. Harvested was 39%, near 35% last year, and ahead of 34% average.

Flaxseed harvested was 93%, behind 100% last year, and near 97% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 2% very poor, 25% poor, 50% fair, 22% good, and 1% excellent. Stock water supplies rated 8% very short, 40% short, 51% adequate, and 1% surplus

Nebraska

For the week ending October 23, 2022, there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 47% very short, 37% short, 16% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 46% very short, 38% short, 16% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn mature was 97%, near 99% last year and 98% for the five-year average. Harvested was 65%, ahead of 57% last year and 46% average. Soybeans harvested was 93%, ahead of 86% last year and 76% average. Winter wheat condition rated 15% very poor, 20% poor, 34% fair, 30% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat planted was 96%, equal to both last year and average. Emerged was 86%, near 83% both last year and average. Sorghum condition rated 40% very poor, 27% poor, 14% fair, 14% good, and 5% excellent. Sorghum mature was 93%, near 96% last year and 97% average. Harvested was 55%, behind 70% last year, but near 52% average. Dry edible beans harvested was 95%, near 92% last year. Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 50% very poor, 32% poor, 17% fair, 1% good, and 0% excellent.

Iowa

Row crop harvest remained ahead of average as Iowa’s farmers had 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 23, 2022, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork included harvesting row crops, fall tillage, and applying fall fertilizer. Dry conditions resulted in some field fires being reported during harvest.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 28 percent very short, 43 percent short, 29 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 28 percent very short, 44 percent short, 28 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus.

Nearly all of Iowa’s corn crop has reached the mature stage or beyond. Harvest of the corn for grain crop reached 59 percent complete, 1 day ahead of last year and 8 days ahead of the average. The percent of corn harvested varied by area of the State with just 38 and 39 percent harvested in northeast and south central Iowa, respectively, and 82 percent harvested in northwest Iowa. Moisture content of field corn being harvested for grain was 18 percent. Corn condition rated 65 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans harvested reached 88 percent complete, 11 days ahead of the average.

Pasture condition rated 26 percent good to excellent. Dry conditions were an issue for cattle.

Minnesota

Minnesota had 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending October 23, 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Favorable weather continued to allow harvest to move quickly.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 18 percent very short, 36 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 15 percent very short, 36 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

Corn harvested for grain was at 61 percent, three days behind last year but about a week ahead of the 5-year average. Corn moisture content of grain at harvest averaged 18 percent.

Soybeans harvested was at 95 percent, on pace with last year and about two weeks ahead of the 5-year average.

Sugarbeet harvest was 96 percent complete, two weeks ahead of the 5-year average.

Sunflowers were 35 percent harvested, about five days behind the 5-year average. Sunflower condition was 0 percent very poor, 0 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 77 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Pasture condition was rated 7 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 37 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.
