South Dakota

For the week ending May 7, 2023, there were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 6% very short, 32% short, 53% adequate, and 9% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 38% short, 51% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn planted was 26%, ahead of 10% last year, and near 24% for the fiveyear average.

Soybeans planted was 10%, ahead of 4% last year, and equal to average.

Winter wheat condition rated 5% very poor, 12% poor, 65% fair, 17% good, and 1% excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 56%, behind 61% last year, and near 60% average. Emerged was 9%, behind 26% last year and 24% average.

Oats planted was 55%, behind 61% last year and 60% average. Emerged was 13%, well behind 33% last year, and behind 28% average.

Sorghum planted was 5%, equal to last year, and near 3% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 5% very poor, 38% poor, 43% fair, 13% good, and 1% excellent.

North Dakota

For the week ending May 7, 2023, there were 3.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 4% very short, 15% short, 71% adequate, and 10% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 4% very short, 23% short, 65% adequate, and 8% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Spring wheat planted was 10%, near 8% last year, but behind 27% for the five-year average.

Durum wheat planted was 6%, near 3% last year, but behind 16% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 0% very poor, 4% poor, 58% fair, 38% good, and 0% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 7%, well behind 29% last year, and behind 17% average.

Corn planted was 1%, equal to last year, and behind 11% average.

Canola planted was 3%, near 2% last year, but behind 9% average.

Sugarbeets planted was 1%, near 2% last year, and well behind 44% average. Oats planted was 6%, near 10% last year, and behind 21% average.

Barley planted was 6%, near 5% last year, but behind 23% average. Dry edible peas planted was 7%, near 4% last year, but behind 19% average.

Nebraska

For the week ending May 7, 2023, there were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 26% very short, 40% short, 32% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 41% very short, 40% short, 17% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn planted was 56%, ahead of 37% last year and 51% for the five-year average. Emerged was 11%, ahead of 4% last year, and near 9% average.

Soybeans planted was 36%, ahead of 27% last year and 29% average. Emerged was 2%, near 1% last year, and equal to average.

Winter wheat condition rated 18% very poor, 33% poor, 37% fair, 12% good, and 0% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 1%, equal to average.

Sorghum planted was 6%, near 2% last year and 5% average.

Oats condition rated 10% very poor, 21% poor, 36% fair, 32% good, and 1% excellent. Oats planted was 90%, equal to last year, and near 86% average. Emerged was 65%, ahead of 60% last year and 58% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 25% very poor, 43% poor, 30% fair, 2% good, and 0% excellent.

Iowa

Mostly dry weather and warmer temperatures meant Iowa farmers had 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork duringthe week ending May 7, 2023, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Conditions allowed farmers to make significant strides planting corn, soybeans, and oats.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 6 percent very short, 27 percent short, 64 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 8 percent very short, 33 percent short, 56 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus.

Forty-one percent of Iowa’s expected corn crop was planted during the week ending May 7, 2023, resulting in 70 percent planted, 12 days ahead of last year and 1 week ahead of the 5-year average. Six percent of the corn crop has emerged, 6 days ahead of last year but a day behind average.

One-third of Iowa’s expected soybean crop was planted during the week ending May 7, 2023, for a total of 49 percent planted, 11 days ahead of last year and just over a week ahead of the average.

Ninety-six percent of the expected oat crop has been planted, just over 2 weeks ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of normal. Oat emergence, at 61 percent, moved from being behind normal a week ago to 9 days ahead of last year and 4 days ahead of the 5-year average.

The first hay condition rating of the season was 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 52 percent good and 10 percent excellent.

Pasture condition rated 43 percent good to excellent. Some cattlemen were still waiting for pastures to put on more growth before turning out their cattle.

Minnesota

Warmer temps and lighter rains enabled Minnesota farmers to get out in their fields with 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 7, 2023, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork included spreading manure and fertilizer, tillage, and planting. No livestock losses were reported and some cattle were moved to pasture.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 6 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 19 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 11 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus.

Corn planting reached 38 percent complete, 9 days ahead of last year but 1 day behind the 5-year average. Corn emergence reached 2 percent.

Soybean planting was 13 percent complete, 9 days ahead of last year but 4 days behind the 5-year average.

Planting progress for barley reached 9 percent with 2 percent of the crop emerged.

Oats planted was at 36 percent with 19 percent emerged.

Spring wheat planting reached 7 percent.

Dry edible beans planting began at 1 percent, potato planting was at 16 percent, and sugarbeets planting was at 23 percent.

All hay condition was rated 35 percent good to excellent, and pasture condition was rated 38 percent good to excellent.
