South Dakota

For the week ending May 14, 2023, there were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3% very short, 16% short, 70% adequate, and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 6% very short, 33% short, 53% adequate, and 8% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn planted was 49%, well ahead of 28% last year, and ahead of 41% for the five-year average. Emerged was 8%, ahead of 1% last year, and near 7% average.

Soybeans planted was 29%, ahead of 14% last year and 22% average. Emerged was 1%, near 2% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 5% very poor, 15% poor, 57% fair, 21% good, and 2% excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 84%, ahead of 76% last year and 78% average. Emerged was 37%, near 41% last year, and behind 42% average.

Oats planted was 84%, ahead of 72% last year and 77% average. Emerged was 41%, near 39% last year and 45% average.

Sorghum planted was 12%, near 10% last year and 8% average.

Sunflowers planted was 1%, equal to both last year and average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 18% poor, 56% fair, 18% good, and 2% excellent.

North Dakota

For the week ending May 14, 2023, there were 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1% very short, 10% short, 70% adequate, and 19% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3% very short, 14% short, 70% adequate, and 13% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybeans planted was 2%, equal to last year, and behind 15% for the fiveyear average.

Spring wheat planted was 20%, near 16% last year, but well behind 46% average. Emerged was 2%, equal to last year, and behind 12% average.

Durum wheat planted was 12%, near 8% last year, but well behind 33% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 54% fair, 43% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 9%, well behind 41% last year, and behind 28% average.

Corn planted was 5%, near 4% last year, but well behind 26% average.

Canola planted was 9%, near 5% last year, but behind 22% average.

Sugarbeets planted was 60%, well ahead of 8% last year, but near 64% average.

Oats planted was 11%, behind 20% last year, and well behind 40% average. Emerged was 2%, equal to last year, and behind 10% average.

Barley planted was 13%, near 10% last year, but well behind 42% average. Emerged was 3%, equal to last year, and behind 10% average.

Dry edible peas planted was 22%, ahead of 12% last year, but behind 40% average. Emerged was 3%, equal to last year, and near 7% average.

Flaxseed planted was 6%, near 5% last year, but behind 17% average.

Potatoes planted was 20%, ahead of 3% last year, but behind 33% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 47% fair, 42% good, and 4% excellent. Stock water supplies rated 0% very short, 5% short, 82% adequate, and 13% surplus.

Nebraska

For the week ending May 14, 2023, there were 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 15% very short, 31% short, 50% adequate, and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 33% very short, 39% short, 26% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn planted was 76%, ahead of 59% last year and 71% for the five-year average. Emerged was 32%, ahead of 17% last year and 26% average.

Soybeans planted was 62%, well ahead of 42% last year, and ahead of 49% average. Emerged was 18%, ahead of 7% last year and 10% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 17% very poor, 32% poor, 34% fair, 16% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 2%, behind 9% last year, and near 5% average.

Sorghum planted was 10%, ahead of 4% last year, but near 14% average.

Oats condition rated 12% very poor, 25% poor, 35% fair, 27% good, and 1% excellent. Oats planted was 95%, near 93% last year and 91% average. Emerged was 86%, ahead of 71% last year and 72% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 26% very poor, 31% poor, 32% fair, 10% good, and 1% excellent.

Iowa

Warm, but wet, weather meant Iowa farmers had just 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week endingMay 14, 2023, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The warmth helped crop emergence this week; however, the wet conditions marginally slowed planting progress. Farmers were still planting corn, soybeans, and oats during the dry periods of the week. Other reports of interest were concerns for isolated flooding and for a swath of large hail across the central portion of the State.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 3 percent very short, 14 percent short, 76 percent adequate and 7 percentsurplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 6 percent very short, 23 percent short, 68 percent adequate and3 percent surplus.

Eighty-six percent of Iowa’s expected corn crop has been planted, 8 days ahead of last year and 1 week ahead ofthe 5-year average. Thirty-five percent of the corn crop has emerged, 6 days ahead of last year and 2 days aheadof the average.

One-fifth of Iowa’s expected soybean crop was planted during the week ending May 14, 2023, for a total of 69 percent planted, just over a week ahead of both last year and the average. Nineteen percent of soybeans have emerged, 9 days ahead of last year and 5 days ahead of normal.

Nearly all the oat crop has been planted with 83 percent emerged, 9 days ahead of last year and 5 days ahead of the average. The first oat condition rating of the season was 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 64 percent good and 13 percent excellent.

Hay condition improved to 72 percent good to excellent.

Pasture condition jumped to 53 percent good to excellent. Reports of livestock turned out to pasture and grazing were received.

Minnesota

Parts of the state received large amounts of precipitation, but overall Minnesota farmers had 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 14, 2023, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Fieldwork included planting and some pre-emerge spraying. Pastures and hay were reported to be greening up. No livestock issues were reported.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 5 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 27 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 7 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus.

Corn planting reached 61 percent complete, 8 days ahead of last year and 1 day ahead of the 5-year average. Corn emergence reached 15 percent.

Soybean planting was 30 percent complete, 8 days ahead of last year but 3 days behind the 5-year average. Soybean emergence reached 4 percent.

Planting progress for barley reached 23 percent with 4 percent of the crop emerged.

Oats planted was at 53 percent with 28 percent emerged.

Spring wheat planting reached 28 percent with 3 percent emerged.

Dry edible beans planting reached 6 percent, potato planting was at 40 percent, sugarbeet planting was 75 percent complete, and sunflower planting began at 1 percent.

All hay condition was rated 55 percent good to excellent, and pasture condition was rated 52 percent good to excellent.
