Nonprofit Spotlight: Humane Society helps animals in Aberdeen area
Carole Kiesz is president of the Aberdeen Area Humane Society.
On March 2, the Aberdeen Area Humane Society will have its annual fundraiser, Cause for the Paws. This was previously known as the Bow Wow Boogie. It will be held at the Eagles with Yappy Hour at 5:30 p.m. and Chow Time at 6:30 p.m. This event includes pick a prize, cat/dog races, paddle wheel, split pot, silent auction and a live auction. Food will be provided by Kelly Miller. This is an event you don’t want to miss. Tickets are available at the Pet Place, Noah’s Critters, Aberdeen Area Humane Society and through the board members. The price of the ticket is $15 per person.
The next fundraiser to be held by the Humane Society is the Second Paw Sale. This sale is held at the Brown County Fairgrounds Clubhouse on April 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations will be accepted beginning April 15 through April 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. every weekday and 1 to 3 p.m. on April 20. Everything except clothing, large appliances and large exercise equipment is accepted. We are in need of volunteers that would be capable of picking up furniture from local residents and delivering it to the fairgrounds during our spring sale. If you would be able to help us, please call 229-0621.
We recently sponsored a fundraiser for an Irish wolfhound, Chloe, we rescued who needed surgery to correct her front legs. We were overwhelmed at the response, receiving donations from states other than South Dakota, including Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and even another country, New Zealand. We feel very fortunate that there are so many generous people who are willing to help Chloe. We are hoping to reach our goal and continue to raise money for Chloe’s Fund in order to help other animals who come into the shelter needing help. We currently also have a German shorthair who is going blind, and we hope to have enough left over from Chloe’s surgery to help Nemo.
The Aberdeen Area Humane Society is a no-kill shelter one mile south, one mile west and half mile south of the intersection of U.S. highways 12 and 281. There are always approximately 85 animals housed at the shelter and all financial help is through donations and fundraisers. No government monies are involved. In 2012, 208 cats and 280 dogs were adopted out of the shelter for a total of 488 animals. Needless to say, we always need donations of food, cat litter, blankets, toys, brushes, paper towels, latex gloves, cleaning supplies etc. Our existence depends on generous people in Aberdeen and the surrounding areas.
We have some projects we would like to complete, but funds are always short. We would like to build a roof over both of our outdoor kennel areas, build a screen porch for our cats to be outside during nice weather, blacktop our parking area and path for volunteers to use while walking dogs around the property, and plant some trees.
If you would like to help the shelter in any way, please contact us at 605-226-1200. We love our volunteers!
