Annual Northeast Farm Tour set for July 9

The annual Northeast Farm Tour will be held on July 9 at 4 p.m. and run till dusk. The tour is located on the junction of State Highway 20 and Codington County Highway 11 or 2.5 miles west of Exit 193 on I-29. The tour will wrap up with a pork loin supper.

There will be four tours this year. Tour 1 will be the weed management tour. It will feature Paul O. Johnson, SDSU Extension weed management coordinator, and Darrel Deneke, SDSU Extension IPM coordinator. They will talk on weed management strategies in the glyphosate resistant period. Tour 2 will feature Ada Szczepaniec, SDSU Extension entomology specialist, talking on management of corn rootworm in continuous corn and Bt resistance in South Dakota. Emmanuel Byamukama, SDSU Extension plant pathologist, and Shaukat Ali, small grains pathologist, will provide information on small grain diseases. Tour 3 will be the small grain variety tour. It will feature Karl Glover, spring wheat breeder and Lon Hall, retired oat breeder.

Tour 4 will be the catch all tour. It will feature Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension soil field specialist, on wheat nutrient deficiency symptoms, Greg Reicks, precision farming research associate, on soybean planting dates, maturity groups, and Howard J. Woodard, soil fertility and management researcher, on nutrient cycling in crop residues.

Between tour’s stop by the poster on soybean insects and what’s new in soybean insects with Kelly Tilmon, SDSU Extension entomologist, or talk with Connie Tande, plant diagnostician, about plant sample issues or questions.

This year the tour is being sponsored by South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, South Dakota Wheat Commission and South Dakota Soybeans Research and Promotion council.
