Every year, the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee organizes and runs the Northern Plains Livestock Day, a livestock show registered with the South Dakota Junior Points Show Association for beef cattle, sheep, and goats. The participants at the Aberdeen show accumulate points to add to points won at other shows during the summer. This lets participants compete not only with kids in their region but also with kids across the state.

This year the show will take place on June 3 at the Brown County Fairgrounds Expo Building. The major sponsors of this year’s show are Glacial Lakes Energy and Dakotaland Feeds. Concessions will be provided by the Westside Ranchers 4-H Club.

Here are the shows and times.

• Market and breeding goat show: Entry time 7:45 – 9:00 a.m., show time 10:00 a.m.

• Jackpot market lamb show: Entry time 7:45 – 9:00 a.m., show time following goat show.

• No-fit steer and heifer show (ages 8-12 only): Entry time 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., show time following jackpot market lamb show.

• Progress steer and heifer show: Entry time 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., show time following no-fit show.

The goat, lamb, and progress beef shows will all have showmanship competitions.

The entry times are important because, this year, if your animals aren’t weighed in by the cutoff time, you will not be allowed to show them. This helps keep the day’s events on track.

Stall fees are $10 per head for goats and sheep and $20 per head for beef, but this fee will be returned to you once your stalls and work areas are clean.

The registration fees (per head) are $15 for goats, $15 for sheep, $10 for no-fit beef, and $20 for progress beef. While entrants can register on the day of the show, it’s a good idea to register for the show early. Any participants registering after May 30 will be assessed the following late fees in addition to the registration fee: $15 for goats, $15 for sheep, $10 for no-fit beef, and $20 for progress beef.

Early registration helps keep the check in process running smoothly and helps make sure the shows start on time, so please register early by visiting http://bit.ly/2qOWxtW and clicking on the link for each show in which you wish to participate. The registration and payment can be completed online. Please call the Chamber of Commerce at (605) 225-2860 for more information.

Exhibitors are limited to no more than 4 goats, 4 sheep, 3 steers and 3 heifers.

Ever since I started volunteering at the event, I’ve heard parents say what a great show it is. And they’re right. During the day there are smiles all around. Smiles from kids. Smiles from proud parents. And smiles from satisfied volunteers.

However, the show always needs more volunteers. After all, it’s an all-day event. If you have some time on June 3, even just a couple of hours, you could put it to good use by giving young people a chance to prove they have what it takes to become our future livestock producers. If you would like to help out at the show, please call Lisa Anderson at the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce at 605-225-2860 or email lisa@aberdeen-chamber.com.
