De Smet, Castlewood, Waubay-Summit and Sioux Valley qualify for state boys basketball tourneys

Area teams De Smet, Castlewood, Waubay-Summit and Sioux Valley each secured state-tournament berths with victories Tuesday night in SoDak 16 Class B and A state-qualifying boys basketball games.

In Class B games, top-seeded and defending state champion De Smet rolled past 16th-seeded Chester Area 66-24 in the Huron Arena; ninth-seeded Castlewood secured its first state-tournament berth since 2012 by rolling eight-seeded Burke 61-39 in Mitchell’s Corn Palace; and 10th-seeded Waubay-Summit secured its first trip to state as a co-op by holding off seventh-seeded Platte-Geddes 49-44 in a game played at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School.

In Class A, seventh-seeded Sioux Valley handled 19th-seeded Hanson 64-34 in a game played in the Sanford Pentagon at Sioux Falls.

The state tourneys are set for March 17-19 at Aberdeen (Class B) and Rapid City (Class A).


No. 1 De Smet 66, No. 16 Chester Area 24 — The Bulldogs (22-1) increased their winning streak to 19 games to earned the chance to defend their state championship with a dominant victory. De Smet raced to a 38-13 halftime lead and played reserves most of the fourth quarter.

Damon Wilkinson tallied 17 points, Tory Holland 16 and Kalen Garry 12 for De Smet, which canned 25 of 48 field-goal attempts for 52 percent and owned the boards 39-20. George Jensen added seven points and Kasen Janssen six.

Wilkinson slo collected seven rebounds and Kadyn Fast five.

Stratton Eppard paced Chester Area (12-11) with 13 points and five rebounds. The Flyers shot only 20 percent (eight of 41) from the field.

No. 9 Castlewood 61, No. 8 Burke 39 — Tristan Nielsen spearhead a strong start for the Warriors (17-6), scoring 16 of his game-high 19 points to lead them to a 32-14 halftime advantage.

Nielsen buried four of his five 3-pointers in the first 16 minutes.

Lane Tvedt contributed 14 points and Bryon Laue 13. Joe Decker and Quincy Thue each chipped in with five.

Ben Witt notched 18 points and Bryce Frank 12 for Burke, which ended its season with a 19-4 record.

No. 10 Waubay-Summit 49, No. 7 Platte-Geddes 44 — Damon Opdahl capped a 20-point night by drained two free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining to end a lengthy state-tourney drought for Waubay and Summit.

Summit made its only state-tourney appearance in 1990 and Waubay had four, the last coming in 1955. The two schools co-oped in the 2015-16 season.

The two teams went back and forth in the first half for Waubay-Summit (20-3) grabbed the lead midway through the second quarter and never gave it back. The Mustangs led by as much as 13 points and 47-39 with 2:28 remaining.

Three free throws by Hayes Rabenberg and a field goal by Caden Foxley pulled the Panthers to within 47-44. After Rabenberg missed a potential game-tying 3 with 11 seconds left, Opdahl rebounded and was fouled. He sank both free throws to nail down the win.

Opdahl also snared six rebounds for Waubay-Summit. Seth Gaikowski scored nine points and Jonathan Johnston and JT Gulbraa each six. Gulbraa also grabbed six rebounds and Johnston five.

Foxley scored nine points and Rabenberg eight for the Black Panthers (17-6).


No. 7 Sioux Valley 64, No. 10 Hanson 34 — Four players scored in double figures to help the Cossacks, the state runner-up last winter, back to the state Class A tournament.

Alex Squires led the way with 17 points, followed by Oliver Vincent at 13, Damian Danzeisen 12 and Parke Puetz 11.

Squires also pulled down 13 of the team’s 40 rebounds. Hayden Ruesink pitched in with seven points and eight rebounds. Vincent also had six assists and three steals.

Sioux Valley shot 48 percent (25 of 52) from the field and Hanson 21 (13 of 61).

Ethan Cheeseman’s 14 points and 10 rebounds sparked the Beavers (16-6). Noah Price added nine and seven.

No. 4 Flandreau 47, No. 13 Clark-Willow Lake 38 — The Fliers (19-3) erased a five-point deficit with a 15-1 scoring surge in the final five minutes of the game, beating their Lake Central Conference rivals for the second time this season.

The Cyclones (15-8) were attempting to avenge an earlier 71-53 loss and took a 37-32 lead on Kaplan Felberg’s 3-pointer and Trey Huber’s three-point play with just under six minutes remaining.

Flandreau answered with a field goal by Liam Streitz, two free throws by Alex Anderson, another field goal by Paul Parsley and three buckets by Tash Lunday to surge ahead 44-37.

After Clark-Willow Lake’s Tyler O’Neill sank one of two free throws in the final minutes, Streitz added a free throw and Lunday two more to close out the win.

Lunday drained nine of 11 free throws and led all players in the game with 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Anderson added 10 points and Streitz six. Chase LeBrun collected nine rebounds.

Huber’s 13 points paced Clark-Willow Lake, which also got eight from O’Neill and six from Felberg. Noah Boykin hauled in nine rebounds, Felberg six and Huber five.

Flandreau canned 15 of 39 field-goal attempts for 39 percent, made 15 of 20 free throws and held a 33-29 rebounding advantage. Clark-Willow Lake shot 32 percent (14 of 44) from the field and went 3-for-6 from the foul line.
